Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un

INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAYHI RAJIOON Meaning

When we are feeling any type of grief or sorrow or suffer any loss, we need solace. Sometimes we need the support from the people around us and some we feel ease by turning to faith. In a hard time of loss, a phrase Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un has great importance in Islam. This phrase means that we belong to Allah and will return to Him too. These words explain our faith and give us patience. We are the Muslims and it is very important for us to have patience in our lives because we have trust in Allah.

Muslims submit themselves to the divine will because Allah has higher power. 

Allah plans everything and his plans are better than our plans. Allah tests us with different things like fear, hunger and loss. The loss can be in different forms like wealth and life. We face disaster and tragedies and then say we belong to Allah and return to Him. We have to be patient in every matter and patience is very important in life. When you have the time of difficulty be patient. Patience can help you face the challenges very easily.

Explaining:

Inna Lillahi”: We say this phrase to acknowledge that we are the creation of Allah. Also we are under His control. It is our basic belief that we believe in one Allah and also belong to Him. It shows the idea of servitude to the Lord and accepting that our existence is the possessions of Allah. We are the belonging to Allah and our lives sustain by a higher power. We also show our gratitude and are thankful to Allah for gifting us the life. Through this phrase, we also express the transient nature of life. 

Our lives are limited and we accept it so we have to prioritize our actions and deeds according to Islam. It is very important to lead a righteous and purposeful life. It is also important to understand the divine principles to get the guidance. These principles are in the Quran. Our actions must align to the moral teachings of Islam. We must focus on piety, justice, honestly, and kindness. Inna Lillahi are important in times of difficulty and especially when we suffer loss.. whatever the tragedy is, we must recite it.

Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un” (and indeed to Him we will return): Our journey in this world is temporary and we will return to Allah. This part is a reminder of our temporary existence in this world. Muslims believe in the temporary nature of worldly life. It is our belief that every soul will finally depart to from where it came. It means return to Allah because our origin is from Allah. When we believe this, we get stronger during the time of grief. The trials are temporary and the eternal reality will be in the hereafter. When you start understanding this, the intensity of your sorrow becomes less. You understand the purpose of your life and accountability you hold.

 Understanding it through the Quran

“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un is in the Quran in the chapter Al-Baqarah 2:156). Allah says to man that when face any loss or difficult circumstances, submit yourself to Allah. We must have faith our origin is from Allah and then our ultimate destination is also with Allah.

Allah says in the Quran that seek Allah’s help through patience and prayer. Allah is with us and especially those who are the patient. We cannot say them dead who die in the path of Allah. These are alive but you do not feel them among you. Allah gives good tidings to those who are the patient , say, Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un.

When Should We Recite It?

On Hearing the News About the Death of Someone:

When someone passes away and you hear such news, you must say Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un. When you say this, you submit to Allah’s will.

 During Funeral and Burial ritual:

We also say this phrase during funeral prayers or during the burial rituals. It shows that the departed soul belongs to Allah and returns to Him.

 Natural Disasters:

When you face natural disasters or come across accidents, you can recite this phrase. In this way you can seek comfort and make your faith stronger.

 Difficult Times

We all face difficult times in life. Challenges are very common in our lives. When you get ill or face financial difficulties or struggle for something, you can recite this phrase.  We depend on Allah and troubles are also temporary.

 Failures:

At many time, people encounter failures. Everything is under the control of Allah and we seek forgiveness from Allah. This will give us comfort in life and get divine wisdom.

 Bad News:

When we hear any bad news, we say Inna Lillah Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajiun. The news could be regarding anything like a diagnosis or any tragedy. Recite these words to get strength and guidance of Allah.

Why Not to say Inna Lillah WA Inna Ilayhi Rajiun

There are certain times when it is not appropriate to say this phrase. You cannot say it casually because then it reduces its significance. When you are in insensitive circumstances, it is also not appropriate to recite these words. Inna Lillah WA Inna Ilayhi Rajiun is also not appropriate for mocking anyone. It has no sarcastic use or becoming disrespectful. We should use such phrases sensibly.

 When you are celebrating any occasions you must not say it. You must show patience in celebrating joyous moments too. This phrase is only for the challenging times. It is very important for Muslims to understand the use of this phrase. When you are consoling people with different faiths or beliefs other than Muslims, it is not appropriate. This phrase is in Islamic faith so do not speak this sentence in public speaking or formal settings.  If there is a situation when you have a responsibility or accountability, you cannot recite this sentence.
